The river that runs red

The river that runs red

A river in China known as the "Golden Watercourse" has suddenly turned bright red!

Experts don’t know why this strange phenomenon in the Yangtze river has happened.  It could be clay that lies at the bottom of other flooded riverbeds that have washed down into this river that turned it this scarlet colour or it could be a result of pollution - yuk!  Strangely another river in China turned red last year but this was due to a very strong chemical polluting the river.

The local people living in Chongqing, where the Yangtze river runs, are so amazed by the colour they have been filling bottles with the crimson water.

The river is very important to the country as it is the largest water system in China! The Three Gorges Dam on the river is the largest dam project and hydro-electric power station in the world.

Did you know?

The second longest river in China is called the Yellow River. This is because natural sediment (the particles at the bottom of a liquid) makes the river water appear yellow.
