Mattias took this photograph of young orangutan, Sambi, at the Nyaru Menteng Orangutan Rehabilitation Center in Central Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. The center was set up by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation to help reintroduce orphaned and displaced orangutans to the wild and it's currently home to 600 of these intelligent apes. Borneo has lost much of its forest habitat to loggers, who clear the trees to make way for planting oil palms or farmland. Orangutans are also hunted for bushmeat, leaving young apes like Sambi alone in the forest. Carers at centers like Nyaru Menteng help teach the orphaned apes the skills they need to survive in the wild. Go, Sambi!
